Mary L. Zwink

Mary L. Zwink, 95, a resident of Elmhaven East nursing home in Parsons, died there at 4:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2016. She was born Aug. 31, 1920, at Iola to William R. and Harriett F. (Mooberry) Lewis. She grew up in Iola and graduated from Iola High School in 1940. During World War II she worked as a machinist in Kansas City and then was employed by Montgomery Ward.  
She attended Manhattan Bible College for a year and on Sept. 7, 1950, married the Rev. Darold Lee Zwink at Manhattan. Together they served churches in Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. They retired to Longton and later she moved to Mound Valley. Rev. Zwink preceded her in death in 1998.
Mrs. Zwink was a member of First Christian Church in Parsons and in past years held various regional and state offices in Baptist churches. She had served on the senior citizens board in Longton.
Surviving is a son, Lee Zwink and his wife, Cathy, and their children Samuel, Christopher and Ashley, of Centennial, Colorado, and a daughter, Jewell Reed and her husband, Michael, of Parsons. She is also survived by a great-niece, Lydia McElroy and her husband, Tim, of Parsons.
Two sisters, Anna May McKee and Ethel Lewis, preceded her in death.
The service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the graveside at Longton Cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons.
Memorials are suggested to the Longton Senior Center and may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.

Marie E. Connell

Marie Connell


Marie E. (Munn) Connell passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Parkview Care 
Center in Osborne, Kansas at the age of 84. She was born on August 28, 1930 in Stockton, 
Kansas to the late Guy and Ida (Smith) Munn. She graduated from Stockton High School 
with the Class of 1948.

On April 23, 1950 Marie was united in marriage to the love of her life Duane Connell
 in Oxford, Kansas. They made their home in Wichita, Kansas for many years where they 
were blessed with a son, Jerry Lynn Connell. Marie retired from the banking industry in
Wichita at the age of 62 and returned to Stockton in 1994 with husband Duane who 
preceded her in death on July 20, 2013.

Marie is survived by her son Jerry Connell of Humboldt; grandchildren Shannon, 
Craig, and Kalynne; five great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; 
and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents Guy and Ida Munn, husband Duane Connell, 
and brother Charles Munn. Marie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and 
sister. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed, but she will live forever 
in our hearts and in our memories.

Velera Adella Spear Sawyer

Velera “Val” Sawyer passed Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 91. She was born July 20, 1923 in Fairfield, NE to Scott and Fern (Ives) Spear.

Val graduated from Stockton High School with the class of 1941. She united in marriage to Homer L. Sawyer on May 20, 1942 in Stockton.

Val was a member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #8871 both of Plainville, and the Senior Companions of Hays where she worked for 28 years before her death.

Survivors include four daughters, Peggy Maytubby, Patty Pruter both of Hays, Sherryl Strong of Colorado Springs, CO, and Randene Frasier of Plainville; sister, Beth Bickel of Haverville, MA; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Homer L. Sawyer, her parents, one granddaughter, two son-in-laws, three sisters, and two brothers.

The garden is the place where we fulfill God’s calling and learn how to grow deep faith, abiding hope, and true love. The consummate gardener, Val taught us with her own life the words of the Apostle Paul who said, “Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – but the greatest of these is love.”

Glenna Loree Holland



Glenna Loree Holland, 84, of Bella Vista died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at her home. She was born March 26, 1930 in Stockton, Kansas the daughter of Jenny and Scott Spear.

Glenna was preceded in death by her husband William Holland, her parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

She is survived by one son; Bill Holland and his wife Ladonna of Texas, one daughter; Terri Breeden of Bella Vista, two sisters; Velera Sawyer of Kansas, Beth Bickle of Massachusetts, four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many loving family and friends.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, October 29 at 10:00 am at Forest Hills Church.

Estate of Ashley Elisha Ives

Ashley Elisha Ives bought land in the northernmost townships in Henry County, Iowa in 1859. Ashley died in 1863. Here is the inventory of Ashley's estate:

To J.B. Drayer, County Judge. The following is all the personal property of Ashley Ives late of Hanry County Deceased that has come to my knowledge: 

  • one cooking stove
  • one set chairs
  • three beds & bedding
  • one two horse harrow
  • one double shovel plow
  • one log chain
  • one cow
  • one breakfast table
  • one safe
  • two three-year old steers

Given under one hand, June ?? 1864

On 31 Aug 1863, before Ashley died, he and his wife Harriet sold 40 acres to their son Robert for $700; and then Ashley sold to Harriet 40 acres for $700.

In 1866 the rest of Ashley's land was sold, grantors being Harriet N. Ives, Robert C. Ives, Emma E. Ives and Lucretia Ives. The probate file was closed 28 Sep 1866.
