Estate of Elisha Ashley

Elisha Ashley, brother of Anna Ashley who married James Ives, died in 1875 with no children to inherit his vast estate. Therefore his estate was divided among his wife and his siblings or their heirs. Elisha's 59-page estate papers can be found in the Vermont Probate Files at:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/

  • Just enter the name Elisha Ashley and for the place put "Vermont, United States."
  • Choose the entry that reads "Vermont Probate Files, 1791 - 1919, residence 1875."
  • Click "view image" and go to to pages 24 & 25.

Elisha's wife Harriet received $16,952.54. The remaining $20, 588.50 was divided equally among Elisha's 10 siblings. Since Anna Ashley Ives had been dead about 50 years, her share of her brother's estate was further divided among her 4 living children, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Scroll to the bottom of page 25, to the last 3 entries, "heirs of Ashley Ives." The three people who each received $98.04 are as follows: Robert Ives, our ancestor; Emma Dow, Robert's sister; and Lucy E. Ives, daughter of Erastus Ives (Robert's brother) -- granddaughter of Ashley Ives and great-granddaughter of Anna Ashley Ives.

In all, 49 people inherited from this estate!

NOTE: Anna Ashley Ives' brother and father were both named Elisha Ashley.

Are we royalty?

Check out this document I found online:

http://dennettfamily.com/genealogy/Royalty.pdf

Person #30, Thomas Ashley, is the grandfather of Anna Ashley who married James Ives.

Remember, just because you find something on the internet does not mean it is true. I'd like to see the sources for all this information myself. But it is interesting, isn't it?

Ashley

Did you ever wonder why so many people in our family are named Ashley? Recent genealogy research has uncovered the Ashley branch of our family! In Aunt Fern's story (in the Ives Scrapbook) she stated that the first Ashley Ives (his full name was Ashley Elisha Ives) was named after his mother's maiden name. The book, Ashleys of the Old Colony by Robert E. Ashley confirms not only that, but he was named after his grandfather, Elisha Ashley!

Ashley Elisha Ives was the father of Robert C. Ives, our Civil War ancestor. Ashley Elisha Ives' father was James Ives who died in Portage County, Ohio 17 Oct 1820. We are still working on the Ives genealogy, but we think James' mother was named Sarah since she was mentioned in his estate papers.

Ashley Elisha Ives' mother was Anna Ashley. The Ashley ancestor tree is on the right.

Keep your fingers crossed that we can find James Ives' ancestors!
