Velera Adella Spear Sawyer

Velera “Val” Sawyer passed Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 91. She was born July 20, 1923 in Fairfield, NE to Scott and Fern (Ives) Spear.

Val graduated from Stockton High School with the class of 1941. She united in marriage to Homer L. Sawyer on May 20, 1942 in Stockton.

Val was a member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #8871 both of Plainville, and the Senior Companions of Hays where she worked for 28 years before her death.

Survivors include four daughters, Peggy Maytubby, Patty Pruter both of Hays, Sherryl Strong of Colorado Springs, CO, and Randene Frasier of Plainville; sister, Beth Bickel of Haverville, MA; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Homer L. Sawyer, her parents, one granddaughter, two son-in-laws, three sisters, and two brothers.

The garden is the place where we fulfill God’s calling and learn how to grow deep faith, abiding hope, and true love. The consummate gardener, Val taught us with her own life the words of the Apostle Paul who said, “Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – but the greatest of these is love.”

Glenna Loree Holland



Glenna Loree Holland, 84, of Bella Vista died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at her home. She was born March 26, 1930 in Stockton, Kansas the daughter of Jenny and Scott Spear.

Glenna was preceded in death by her husband William Holland, her parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

She is survived by one son; Bill Holland and his wife Ladonna of Texas, one daughter; Terri Breeden of Bella Vista, two sisters; Velera Sawyer of Kansas, Beth Bickle of Massachusetts, four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many loving family and friends.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, October 29 at 10:00 am at Forest Hills Church.
